Degradation characteristics and evaluation methods of aliphatic polyesters for bone implantation

      • Objective To systematically investigate the degradation characteristics and evaluation methods of aliphatic polyesters for bone implantation.
Methods The properties and application limitations of mainstream aliphatic polyester materials were summarized, the risks associated with bone implantation were analyzed, and the key strategies for evaluating degradation characteristics were proposed.
Results Homopolymers have limitations in either degradation rate or metabolic safety; copolymerization or compounding with alkaline inorganic materials can regulate material properties and alleviate inflammation; the combination of in vitro and in vivo degradation studies together with comparison with marketed products constitutes the core of evaluation.
Conclusion A three-dimensional evaluation system of "combination of in vitro and in vivo studies, comparison with similar products, and matching with clinical applications" is established based on the analysis of material degradation risks.
